Why Do You Need German for the RWR+ Card?
One of the key requirements for obtaining the RWR+ card is demonstrating basic German language skills. Knowing German helps with everyday life, finding a job, and integrating into Austrian society.
Required German Level: A1 Is Enough
To qualify for the RWR+ Card, applicants must prove at least A1-level German proficiency. A1 is the most basic level, indicating that a person can understand and use simple phrases and expressions.
Alternative: Integration Agreement (Modul 1)
Instead of an A1 certificate, applicants can also meet the requirement by completing Modul 1 of the Austrian Integration Agreement. This agreement is a legal requirement for certain residence permits and involves German language learning as well as integration courses. More details can be found here: Integration Agreement Austria.
Recognized Language Certificates
Not all German language certificates are accepted for the RWR+ Card. Austria recognizes officially accredited certificates from approved institutions, such as:
- Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD
- Goethe-Institut, Telc GmbH
- Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF)
These certificates must be presented during the application process to prove compliance with the language requirement.
Where Can You Take a German Exam in Austria?
Applicants can take A1-level German exams at various testing centers across Austria, including:
- ÖSD Examination Centers
- Goethe-Institut Locations
- University Language Centers
- Private Language Schools Offering Recognized Tests
Most institutions offer exam dates regularly, but early registration is recommended, as spots can fill up quickly.
Costs and Registration Process
The cost of an A1-level German exam varies by provider but typically ranges from €100 to €150. However, there are free options available for Ukrainian refugees through government-funded programs and NGOs (e.g., Austrian Integration Fund, Caritas, Volkshochschulen). Registration is usually done online or directly at the exam center.
How Long Is a Certificate Valid?
German language certificates do not expire in the same way as visas or residency permits.
However, Austrian authorities require a certificate issued within the last year to ensure up-to-date language proficiency. The certificate can be obtained in Austria or abroad.
Exemptions: Who Doesn’t Need a Language Certificate?
Not everyone applying for an RWR+ Card must provide proof of German skills. The following exceptions apply:
- Health-Related Reasons: If an applicant has a medical condition that prevents them from learning German, they may be exempt (proof from a doctor is required).
- Short-Term Stay: If someone is staying in Austria for a limited period and will not seek long-term residency, the language requirement might not apply.
Other RWR+ Card Requirements at a Glance
Besides language skills, applicants must meet additional criteria to obtain the RWR+ Card:
- Insurance: Full coverage, including health, accident, and pension insurance.
- Employment or Self-Employment: A valid employment contract or proof of self-employment in Austria.
- Minimum Income: Proof of sufficient financial means to support oneself.
- Accommodation: Proof of a registered residence in Austria.
